22 Things at 22 Months

I told you I'd do this! I swore I'd stop after 18 or so, but I was able to think of 22 things. We'll see if I make it to another "birthday."

22 Things about Connor at 22 Months

1) Like most boys, he’s mesmerized by all things with an engine, whether it’s a car, a truck, a train or an airplane. Connor will point each and every one out to us. Wherever we are.
2) He’s a mover and a shaker. I’ve mentioned before his love of music, but Connor has the moves. He’s so uninhibited when it comes to dancing. He’ll groove to any kind of music, anywhere.
3) Connor loves animals. I’m so glad he’s growing up with a dog and a cat, and is around other animals as well. He has a healthy respect for dogs, especially, but isn’t afraid of them at all. I love that.
4) He’s a ladies’ man. He’s had a thing for “older” women for a while, but he’s definitely started to flirt with more age-appropriate girls. He lights up when he sees Evie, Alexis, Hollis or Sophia. He’s a gentleman, though, always wanting to hold their hands.
5) He is obsessed with the Noggin show “Jack’s Big Music Show.” As music lover myself, I’m okay with this. It could be a heck of a lot worse.
6) He’s on his way to becoming a water rat. He’s always loved his bath, and loved his first few pool adventures. He spent nearly an hour in a baby pool at our friend’s house this past weekend, even though he was shivering.
7) Connor is also on his way to becoming a beach bum. He loved the dry sand last year, but wasn’t too fond of the wet sand and surf. Although it took a little coaxing from Dad this year, he fell in love with the beach and “splash” (the ocean). We had a hard time preventing him from running to far into the surf!
8) He’s talking up a storm. Too bad we can’t understand about 90% of what he’s saying, but he talks all the time. And he’s very intentional with it, too. New words are coming daily, and he’s beginning to recognize the alphabet, too. Oh, and he repeats everything. Well, almost everything…
9) He’s obsessed with keys. Yep, keys. We have to hide our car keys from him, or we’ll never get them back. We’ve given him is own key ring with a ‘homeless’ key, that he carries around everywhere, and tries to use in each and every lock.
10) He likes brushing his teeth. We do have periodic battles, don’t get me wrong, but somehow we got lucky with this one. Although, if he doesn’t get his own toothbrush while we’re brushing he’ll throw a fit, but we’ll go with that.
11) Connor loves shoes, especially his Crocs. Crocs have been one of my few “I’ll never do that” subjects. But, alas, for $10 at the outlet and neoprene heel straps, I caved. Good thing since Connor doesn’t want to take them off.
12) He’s a neat freak. Connor always wants to pick up “trash” and throw it away. He willingly puts his clothes in the hamper and often puts his toys away without being asked. His room is going to be much cleaner than the rest of the house, as soon as he has control of it.
13) He’s already been to 9 states in his short life. Not as many for some, but we think it’s pretty good.
14) Connor is a huge Laurie Berkner fan. With the exception of Jack’s Big Music Show, no other media captures his attention. Never heard of her? Pied Piper for the toddler set. Thankfully, her music is definitely tolerable for adults, too.
15) He’s a pretty adventurous eater … for a toddler. He’ll try almost anything at least once, from pickles to hummus to roasted red peppers. He also refuses everything he’s once loved, at one time or another. But that’s no different than any other toddler.
16) Toddler tendencies aside, he’s a pretty easy-going kid. He adapts to change better than the average toddler, I think. It doesn’t take him long to adjust to new environments and new people. So when we face the periodic sleep regression or “stage” it catches us off-guard.
17) We’re psyched that the ear tubes seemed to have done the trick. No ear infections since February, although he’s had a few of the run-of-the-mill daycare colds.
18) He loves old movies, just like his Dad. No, we don’t sit him in front of the TV (oftenJ), but he does flip on the set to Turner Classic Movies. He’s particularly fond of old war movies. Or Humphrey Bogart.
19) Connor already has a thing for cell phones. He used to walk around school with an old Blackberry, “talking” and “texting.” Now he’s using an old PDA. We’ve learned not to leave our cell phones within reach, or he’ll make a mess of them.
20) I love picking him up from daycare. I know he has fun, is a good kid and enjoys learning new things. But, there’s nothing watching him look up and see you for the first time, then run over and give you a big hug.
21) I love his hair! It’s a beautiful light brown with a hint of red. When it’s a bit on the long side, he also has the best waves and curls.
22) Toddler tantrums and tendencies aside, Connor is one sweet little boy. We can’t imagine our life without him!

Long time, no see ...

Ooops. Sorry about that. I'd like to say I can't believe that it's been that long since I've updated this thing, but I'd be lying. In short, life's been good. Busy, of course, but good. Work was very nutty for about six weeks (and you read all about it if you're my friend on Facebook). But, thankfully, that storm has passed for the time being.

Connor is 22 months old. Holy moly, does time fly! I started writing the "22 things about Connor at 22 months", but I'm not quite finished yet. I PROMISE to add it:-).

What's Up Wednesday

Okay, so I skipped a week. I swear I tried a couple of times to upload pix and write, but our crappy wireless network at home knocked me off. Oh well... Life's pretty sane for us right now, which is a good thing. Here's a few things going on in our lives:

  • Connor had ear tubes put in a couple of weeks ago. Poor guy has had back-to-back-to-back ear infections and has been on antibiotics more often than not in the past 6-8 months. The procedure was a breeze; too bad the 4-hour nap didn't become standard

  • We just got back from a fabulous long weekend in Savannah. We met R.'s Mom and her friend (she's actually our grandmother-in-law, but it's hard to explain:-)). We had a great time despite the fact that Connor rarely slept. The trip was reminiscent of our beach trip last year; he'd only nap in the stroller, and we had to drive him in the car to get him to sleep at night. NOT fun...
  • We rented a fabulous condo in the heart of the historic district. The location was fantastic and the experience was grand. If you're ever interested, let me know.

  • Connor's new favorite phrase is "No, no." It is already my least favorite, but he is very cute when he says it.

  • It snowed in the ATL! 3 inches here is a HUGE deal; too bad it was on a Sunday (and we had to drive back in it from Savannah)

  • Two good friends have been matched with birthmothers. Yay for E. and K & M. I'm keeping all involved in my thoughts and prayers. I remember the exciting and stressful time as if it was yesterday.
  • I am obsessing over a BOB Revolution stroller. Anyone have one? It's pricey, so I'm trying to justify what the real benefit is to Connor and to us. Maybe it'll just pass...

Okay, now what you've been waiting for:

Who the heck is that statue of??

What is that, Mom?

Dang, I'm Pathetic

But you already knew that. Six weeks since I posted last... a new personal record! Sorry, folks. I guess if you're on Facebook, though, you know what's going on in our world. In an attempt to get back on the blogging bandwagon, I'm taking the approach that a lot of my blog "friends" use when they are time-challenged.

Introducing "What's Up Wednesdays!" I'll do my best to post a few things that might be going on in our world. Some may be interesting, some quite mundane. At least it's an attempt to showcase what an amazing little boy Connor is becoming!

So, without further adieu, here's what's up with us:

  • Connor is scheduled for ear tubes on Friday. While we're not anxious yet, we probably will be Friday morning. Poor guy has had a least 3 ear infections since before Christmas. In the past six months, he's probably been on antibiotics more often that he hasn't been. Fingers crossed this will help us all.
  • We're taking a trip to the coast next weekend to see Grandma Ruth and Grandma-in-Law Bette! We're psyched to see them, and so they can see Connor. It's been since August, so they're dying to get their hands on him.
  • This weekend, Connor officially said the word "no" audibly, and while shaking his head left to right repeatedly. Our world is forever changed.
  • One of Connor's favorite things to do now is "read" books. He actually has to have 2-3 books in his crib AFTER he wakes up in the morning. Since our morning routine is pretty tight to begin with, this extra few minutes is a crunch, but it's so cute, we don't want to do anything about it.
  • I am hopelessly addicted to Facebook. There, I've said it:-).
  • No pictures today, but I hope to post some in the next few days. Of course, last time I said that, I didn't write for 6 weeks, so we'll see how it goes.

More later (I promise!).

Trying to Start 2009 on the Right Foot

Happy New Year, everyone! This will be quick, since I wanted to give a short update on what's going on with us. Not that we have any spectacular news or anything, so don't worry, you're not missing anything:-).

We had a very low-key, but wonderful Christmas. My mom and stepdad came down for a couple of days to share the holiday with us. Even though this was Connor's second Christmas, he still doesn't understand what the deal is, either with Santa [we were 0 for 3 for happy meetings with the jolly one] or the true meaning of the Christian holiday. We didn't end up opening many presents at all, which was just fine. Just the change in schedules and energy in the air affected Connor's routine (only a 1-hour nap on Christmas Day!!!!!), so we decided to extend things over the following days. We thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas Dinner with Mom and D. and our friends who joined us last year. We think two years in a row now makes a tradition. We were all blessed with many wonderful gifts from thoughtful and generous friends and family!

I'll update in the next couple of days about the rest of our holiday, and my 2009 goals, which includes a more regular update schedule for the blog. Ha... I have the greatest of intentions!

I'll leave you with a picture of Connor and his daddy on Christmas Day... it's Connor's favorite new expression:-).

Headed down the tubes path

I had to pick Connor up from school yesterday after he had a 101+ degree temp. Nice... meant I had to take Friday off to stay with the poor guy, since he wasn't at the top of his game, and the school has a pretty firm "no-admittance-for-at-least-24-hours-after-fever" policy. Since he had some of the benign symptoms we've been looking out for, I took him to see his Pedi today to confirm he has yet another ear infection. That's at least 5 since May. But at least this one is only in one ear, unlike every other one he's had. Of course, it comes a mere week after our consult with the ENT (who thankfully is our neighbor as well), where his ears were perfectly clear, and his hearing tested perfectly. Oh, and he picked up at least 5 words the week before the ENT, too, so our theory that his speech could be delayed by the repeat ear infections seems to have been tossed out the window. Regardless, we'll get back with the ENT, and schedule tubes for sometime in January.

Poor Connor ... the little trooper seems to have such a high tolerance for pain that we generally don't know he has an ear infection. We're just trying to get better at picking up the cues, like a snotty nose and lack of appetite (which also describes 90% of what goes around daycares in the winter months). He seemed to be nearly back to normal this evening, thanks to a 3-hour nap. And he went down at his normal bedtime without any fuss. PLEASE stay asleep:-).

We're headed to Breakfast with Santa tomorrow morning with some friends. It should be interesting since we're all heading with toddlers. Connor is NOT a fan of Santa. Trip #1 resulted in hysterics (by Connor, not Santa). We did get pictures, so, in addition to a good chuckle from friends and family, we'll also use these photos as blackmail when he's dating.

Connor at 16 Months

Lame... go ahead and say it. Connor's mom is lame for going more than a month with no updates. Oh well. At least I'm back for a bit with an attempt to do better. I'm much better on Facebook, so if you friend me (and I know who you are), you'll keep up a bit better.

Connor turned 16 months old this week. You hear this all the time, but it's true - he's more and more fun! A terrible two, mind you, but so cool to hang out with.

1 - He's found his best friend - his lovey Roary. He will not go to bed at night without it (we learned the hard way when R. was putting him down and Roary was with me at the store). To bad Target doesn't sell them any more, but eBay does - for $30 (it was $8 originally).
2 - He loves broccoli. Really... he'll eat an entire bowl and ask for more.
3 - One of his favorite games is "flashlight in the bathroom." Close the door, and turn the flashlight off and on. He also loves to play hide-and-seek behind any door.
4 - He loves it when you dump water over his head. During his bath, he'll hand you his bucket and do the 'more' sign. I think we'll have a pool rat on our hands.
5 - He is a terrible two. He's been throwing tantrums for months, but they're becoming textbook. Frustrating, yes. But very funny.
6 - He's a charmer. He hasn't met a female he hasn't said, "hey" to. And when he blows kisses, watch out.
7 - His vocabulary doubled overnight. While he's always been vocal, we haven't understood many words. But he added "uh-oh," "oww" for meow, "bau" for ball, and "moe" for more, just this week.
8 - He's on the verge of running. Yikes. He's only been walking since Halloween, so he's not a pro by any means, but he sure is building up steam.
9 - He loves trains and airplanes. He's definitely a boy!
10 - We could have another lefty in the family. While I know it's early, he does "throw" things with his left hand most of the time.
11 - He's a social butterfly (see #6). He generally hasn't met a party that he doesn't like. He tends to sit back and soak it in, but after a few minutes, he's running, jabbering and laughing. He'll even sleep a couple of hours in a friend's pack-n-play so mom and dad can have some fun.
12 - He does not like Santa. We'll try again, and this time we'll leave the goldfish at home:-).
13 - He loves school. He barely notices when I drop him off with his morning teacher. In the afternoons, he'll look up and smiles when he sees you, but goes about his business. He has them all snowed (especially Ms. Shea).
14 - He seems to have a high tolerance for pain. Not that it's a thing to brag about, but he's been amazing. He's had multiple ear infections but we hardly every know. Teething was a breeze, even the 3 one-year molars (but we're not jinxing ourselves).
15 - He loves our special nighttime routine. When it's my turn to put him down, we read books, then say "goodnight moon" to our moon-shaped light, and "goodnight stars" the glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling in his room. He even waves. AAWWW...
16 - He has the best toddler smile and laugh on the planet, hands down. This kid is something special.
